Despite his
(self-adopted) Italian first name Giacomo Meyerbeer was a German of wealthy descent.  He became in the mid 19th Century
the doyenne of French Grand Opera, presenting the requisite huge sprawling epics then in vogue at Paris.  L'Africaine
became fairly well known after his death but this has universally been in the revised, shortened and simplified version
completed by Fetis.  

Meyerbeer never called it L'Africaine and continued to rework it as Vasco de Gama until
his death.  This is the version as it stood then.   We'll never know if it was as finally intended but it does restore
some meaty subcurrents long excised.  A more feisty side to Selika and more rounded thoughts on colonialism to name but
two.  The full running length of 4+ hours is remarkably engaging throughout.

As far as I know there is only
one recording of this Meyerbeer-only version, but in case I'm wrong this is the one with Berchtold, Sorokina and Yang
under Beermann.
